Working with wood since 1999

The Joinery Shop was established in 1999 at Rookley on the Isle of Wight by Richard Basford and in 2019 celebrates 20 years in service.

With three generations of builders in the family history dating back to post-war Britain, when there was an understandable surge in South coast redevelopment after WW11, for Richard and his father it is very much part of their DNA for the tradition of house building and joinery to be continued.

It was a natural step for Richard to start his working life at the family business before specialising and beginning his joinery career as an apprentice at Westridge Builders in Ryde and Vectis Joinery in Newport.

When the owner of Vectis Joinery retired in 1999 Richard took the opportunity to carry on the business under his own leadership adopting the simple but memorable name 'The Joinery Shop'.

Over the last 20 years, the name has become a byword on the Island and further afield for attention to detail, fine craftsmanship and value for money. Many of the manor houses and important historic building on the Island alongside commercial properties and modern bespoke homes have been enhanced and restored by the exacting work carried out by Richard and his team many of whom have worked at The Joinery Shop since its foundation.

Today the Joinery Shop is also known for its bird of prey emblem which as well as reflecting the natural beauty of the company's island home and its wildlife, is also a part of the Basford family's ancient coat of arms.

As Richard often says, 'Accuracy, beauty, and creativity, with an eye for detail, is all we aspire too when working with wood'.
